If you are already bored with your simple KDE login screen, you can spice it up a little through theming. To help you, I have collected several user-submitted and ready-to-use KDM themes that I think would stand out above all others. Enjoy!
Pulsar
Asphyxia
WorldKdm
Noir
Earth-abstract
Sweet Darkness
Login-scan 'fusion'
TrueNature
Linux Passion
Toxic
Free your world
Shuttle
Umbrella Corp
Access
Amora
Why is a KDE theme using a GNOME foot?
ReplyDeletewhoaa! I love the true nature!
ReplyDeleteSo, how does one install some of these themes. I download them, untar into a directory and when I try to install, nothing is found to install.
ReplyDeleteYou shouldn't untar them. Just run 'System Settings' from the K-menu and under 'Advanced' tab choose 'Login Manager' and then the 'Theme' tab 'Install New Theme. Sadly I had no luck with any other theme than Earth abstract :(
ReplyDeleteAs an update to my previous post. I know now what the problem with some of these themes was and how to fix it.
ReplyDeleteIf you have a problem installing any of these do the following:
Unpack/untar the theme (right click on file and Extract archive here should work). Then you have to edit file called KdmGreeterTheme.desktop. In this file change [GdmGreeterTheme] to [KdmGreeterTheme]. Save the file and then tar and gzip it (right click on the directory -> Compress -> Gzip compressed tar-archive). It should be installable now.
Some other problem could be that the KdmGreeterTheme.desktop doesn't exist att all. Instead there is a GdmGreeterTheme.desktop. Rename it and change inside of it as described above.
Have fun!
Lovely, really lovely themes =)
ReplyDeleteIf you are using opensuse 10.3 with KDE3 desktop then unzip the file into ..
ReplyDelete/opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/themes
You can then select your theme in Yast ( not in the KDE control Center).
In Yast select the 'System' Icon in the left pane, then select the '/etc/sysconfig Editor' icon. Then in the new dialog box that appears expand the 'Desktop' option by clicking on the '+' symbol, then expand 'Display Manager' in the same way, then click on the 'DISPLAYMANAGER_KDM_THEME'. The default setting will be SUSE. Replace this with the name of you new theme, ie I downloaded the ToxicTheme. So I entered ToxicTheme.
I'm don't know whether it's needed but I also edited the KdmGreeterTheme.desktop file and changed [GdmGreeterTheme] to [KdmGreeterTheme]. I guess this is also a good place to find the name of the Theme for use in editing /etc/sysconfig

Came here for the Amora theme, although its a bit dated it works like a charm on my old laptop. Thank you!
