Ubuntu, undoubtedly today's most popular Linux distribution has been around for 4 years. Its first official version was released in October of 2004. In the span of four years, Ubuntu has already unleashed 9 stable versions including the recently released Ubuntu 8.10 "Intrepid Ibex". Let's take a visual desktop tour of Ubuntu starting from its inaugural version:
1. Ubuntu 4.10 "Warty Warthog"
2. Ubuntu 5.04 "Hoary Hedgehog"
3. Ubuntu 5.10 "Breezy Badger"
4. Ubuntu 6.06 "Dapper Drake"
5. Ubuntu 6.10 "Edgy Eft"
6. Ubuntu 7.04 "Feisty Fawn"
7. Ubuntu 7.10 "Gutsy Gibbon"
8. Ubuntu 8.04 "Hardy Heron"
9. Ubuntu 8.10 "Intrepid Ibex"
To end this post, I would like to leave you with this poll question:
They just can't get enough of brown, now, do they? Well, at least there's been been some deviation from their art starting with Hardy Heron. I'm just talking about the desktop, of course as this is what this post is all about, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteUnbuntu just totally rocks dude. Best platform yet!

Boy is it ever ugly. I hope they get things fixed in a year or so.

They should really come up with something new and fresh for a change. Luckily themes are easy to change and Ubuntu is great otherwise.
ReplyDeleteI like the brown, always used the default theme. Everyone else has blues or greens, brown is distinctive and unique and sets it apart from the others
ReplyDeleteLet's just hope that my wireless will work this time on this latest release.

ReplyDeleteit was alright, i like the themes i guess, but overall, all that matters is that it will be fast
ReplyDeletethey have a brand and it works. anyone judging an OS by the default theme is doing themselves a disservice.
ReplyDeleteI probably liked Dapper best out of the box.
ReplyDeleteI am still running Hardy with the default wallpaper but I used GIMP to put into grayscale. I really like the subdued desktop with that nice texture and bird.
Personally I think brown out of the box is fine, I ran one of the Vista wallpapers on Fiesty and confused the hell out of people, but I don't like people thinking I am running MS anymore.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Oh wow! F***g Ubuntu linux gets a new wallpaper and everybody's excited... I'd rather pay for Windows 7... pfff.. Linux for the desktop... It's been 10 years since a promise no one has been able to deliver... please
ReplyDeleteLooks more like a MAC.
ReplyDeleteThey should think differently and come up with ideas
I don't use Gnome, I use KDE, and my desktops are SO BEAUTIFUL compared to those screenshots, it's amazing. I started using Ubuntu with its release of Hoary (5.04), and I assure you that my desktops didn't look ugly like that...
ReplyDeleteI like the brown theme of Ubuntu, but i really do prefer blue or green or even black themes. But for me it's not about what the color of the default theme is - it's about the fact that i can change it in so many more ways than Windows allows me to. That for me is one of the most valuable things about Linux in general - real choice.
ReplyDeleteThe only one I NEVER used was 4.10 "Warty Warthog"
ReplyDeleteDamn !! I feel like downloading it now.
Microsoft and Apple have researched user interfaces as no other company and have spent millions and millions to find out what's best.
ReplyDeleteWhy does Ubuntu/Canonical go with brown then?
White, grey and blue are the colors to use...
I know it's easy to apply another theme, but it would be nice if the default Ubuntu theme would be a light one: clean, clear and crisp.
But, beauty is in the eye of the beholder....
Brown is a color of insanity... not that I dont like it or indeed Ubuntu...
ReplyDeleteits barely changed…
